Honoring the Fallen: The Significance of National Police Week

National Police Week is an annual event that takes a solemn look back at the law enforcement officers who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. This commemorative week provides a reminder of the risks that police officers face daily and serves as a time for reflection, remembrance, and community solidarity.

Established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, National Police Week pays tribute to the service and sacrifice of U.S. law enforcement. President Kennedy's proclamation designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, with the surrounding week known as Police Week. Events typically take place in Washington, D.C., drawing between 25,000 to 40,000 law enforcement officers, their families, and other visitors from across the country and around the world.

Candlelight Vigil: Held at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, the vigil sees thousands of candles lit in remembrance of officers who have died in the previous year.

National Peace Officers Memorial Service: One of the largest events of the week, this service occurs on the steps of the U.S. Capitol and includes speeches, special recognitions, and reading the roll call of the deceased.

Police Unity Tour: In this event, officers and supporters cycle hundreds of miles to the memorial in Washington, D.C., to raise awareness and funds for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
