It was 1985 and we had just finished a 10k road march and were all were all lined up along the side of the road. Drill Sgt F. was walking down the line of troops who were all standing at attention. He caught one of the privates looking at them out of the corner of his eye and immediately started in on the hapless trainee with the whole "Do you like me, Private?" routine.The poor kid was just squirming. Of course, some other soldier had to look to see what was happening in the drill sergeant moved his attention to the next victim. I couldn't help myself, I waited until he was two soldiers to my left and I looked at him out of the corner of my eye and waited till he saw me.Seconds later he was in my face screaming "Do you like me, Private? "Without hesitation and in a loud voice I replied: "I have not been on the drill sergeants acquaintance long enough to form an opinion drill sergeant!"His eyes grew large and he just stared at me before turning on his heel and walking away. I couldn't believe I had gotten away with it.
