Ever dreamed of tracking down a Sasquatch, Loch Ness Monster, or Yeti? Well, you're not alone. Cryptid hunting has become a popular pastime for thrill-seekers and believers alike, sober, medicated, or otherwise. If you're ready to embark on your own cryptid adventure, here are some of the best destinations to start your search.

The Pacific Northwest: Sasquatch Country

The Pacific Northwest, particularly Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia, is considered Sasquatch territory. This forested region is said to be the ideal habitat for the elusive ape-like creature. Popular spots for Sasquatch sightings include the Olympic Peninsula, the Cascade Mountains, and the remote wilderness of British Columbia. As for lures, the internet seems to be split between a cartoonish picnic basket of sandwiches and snacks, and pre-rolls with a large handled roach clip. Since we can’t be sure, try both…For science! (Don’t break any laws, though; Harry wouldn’t want that.)

Scotland: The Lair of the Loch Ness Monster

If you're looking for a more aquatic adventure and your life insurance is up to date, head to Scotland and try your luck at spotting the elusive Loch Ness Monster. (Not that you need a reason to go to Scotland). This mythical creature has been the subject of countless sightings and legends. While there's no scientific evidence to support its existence, many people believe that the Loch Ness Monster is still lurking deep beneath the waters of Scotland's largest lake, and there are some interesting theories that don’trequire tin foil hats.

The Himalayas: Home of the Yeti

For a truly challenging cryptid hunt, head to the Himalayas. This remote and mountainous region is said to be the home of the Yeti, a giant ape-like creature also known as the Abominable Snowman (Though that nickname is just ridiculous). There is no consensus as to whether or not Yeti and ‘Squatch are related, but it would strain credibility to assume that there were TWO undiscovered, unconnected apex apes. While sightings of the Yeti are rare, the rugged terrain and extreme conditions of the Himalayas make it a thrilling place to explore.

Central America: The Haunt of the Chupacabra

Stop giggling, first; yes that’s what the literal translation is, no that’s not what it’s sucking. If you're looking for a more exotic cryptid adventure, head to Central America and search for the Chupacabra. This legendary creature is said to be a vampire-like beast that attacks livestock, draining it’s blood with long hollow fangs. While this is a similarity to your ex in sentiment, it’s not that similar in method.  While there's no scientific evidence to support its existence, many people believe that the Chupacabra is still roaming the forests and jungles of Central America.

Australia: The Land of the Yowie

Australia is home to a variety of unique wildlife, including the elusive Yowie, though like most of the ‘dangers’ of Australia this one might be another attempt by the locals to keep tourists at bay. This ape-like creature is said to inhabit the forests and mountains, and while sightings of the Yowie are rare, the vast and unexplored wilderness makes it a thrilling place to search for this mythical creature. Keep in mind that customs controls almost as intense as Aussies themselves.

Tips for Successful Cryptid Hunting

- Do your research, such as it is. Learn as much as you can about the cryptid you're searching for, including its habitat, behavior, and reported sightings, as well as the kinds of people reporting them.

- Pack appropriately, and be prepared for the elements, especially if you're hunting in a remote or unfamiliar region and climate.

- Be patient. Cryptids are elusive creatures; they didn’tsurvive this long after the invention of camcorders because they’re sloppy, so don't expect to see one right away.

- Respect the environment: Leave no trace and avoid disturbing wildlife. It’s good advice in general, but goodwill from the forestain’t nothing if you get cornered.

Cryptid hunting is a great way to explore new places and have an adventure, even if your chances of success are about the same as winning the lottery. So, grab your gear, pack your bags, and get ready to embark on your own cryptid adventure… Or maybe bring a weekend to hold the camera?
