Let’s All Go to The Lobby – The Most Anticipated Movies of Summer 2024

As summer approaches, the excitement for summer movies reaches a fever pitch. The season has long been synonymous with blockbuster releases, and this year promises to be no different. Going to theaters has gotten much more expensive over the years, which in turn means we often must be more particular in the choices we make. To help guide that decision and save you some money, here are a few of the most anticipated movies for the summer of 2024. We haven’t steered you wrong before!

Superhero Action Comedy – Deadpool & Wolverine (Deadpool 3)

In a world where superhero movies take themselves very seriously, enter Deadpool and Wolverine, the dynamic duo nobody expected or asked for, but needed all the same. Deadpool, the wisecracking, fourth wall-breaking mercenary with a penchant for sarcasm and chimichangas, teaming up with Wolverine, the gruff, no-nonsense mutant with adamantium claws and a temper shorter than his cigar. Their unlikely alliance begins with Deadpool pestering Wolverine like an overenthusiastic puppy trying to befriend a grumpy old dog. Deadpool's antics range from impersonating Hugh Jackman (Wolverine's actor, of course) to staging mock battles just to see Logan's "I'm too old for this" face. One sympathizes.

Despite their differences, the two manage to complement each other perfectly. Deadpool's unpredictability and Wolverine's razor-sharp focus create a hilariously dysfunctional but highly effective team. They bicker, banter, and begrudgingly save the day, leaving a trail of chaos and severed limbs in their wake. Reviews will be mixed because of how unserious this film is likely to be, but Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool hasn’t disappointed so far. (Except that one time, and we don’t talk about that).

Sci-Fi / Horror – Alien: Romulus

In Alien: Romulus, humanity once again proves that curiosity didn’t just kill the cat; it also led to a lot of running and screaming. The film kicks off with a team of space colonists who, despite decades of cinematic evidence warning them otherwise, decide to poke around a derelict space station for salvage. This is not Mars or Venus, but Romulus, where, unsurprisingly, things go south faster than a xenomorph at a free Ripley buffet.

The crew, equipped with the latest in useless sci-fi gadgets, stumble upon an alien egg. One face hugger later, and the ship's interior looks like an episode of "Pimp My Ride," except with less rims and more slime and corpses. Our heroes, apparently fans of Darwin’s theory in reverse, proceed to make every possible wrong decision, including splitting up and exploring dark corridors alone. Spoiler: It doesn't end well. As of time of writing, the movie hasn’t been released yet, but be honest, we nailed that one, didn’t we?

Action / Comedy - Bad Boys: Ride or Die

Bad Boys: Ride or Die brings back our favorite duo, Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence), return to the streets of Miami with their signature blend of explosions, witty banter, and an uncanny ability to destroy anything in their path. This time, they're not just fighting crime; they're fighting time, as Marcus faces his mortality and Mike grapples with a midlife crisis.

The plot kicks off when a former captain is killed, and they are set up to take the fall. Cue the car chases, gunfights, and a trail of destruction that would bankrupt any real police department. As they race through Miami, the duo stumbles upon a conspiracy that makes absolutely no sense but provides ample opportunities for explosive set pieces and hilarious one-liners. Along the way, they team up with a tech-savvy millennial task force that leaves Marcus yearning for the days of flip phones and typewriters.

Action / Sci-Fi - Borderlands

Get ready for a wild ride through the chaotic world of Pandora, a place where the only thing crazier than the residents is the planet itself. The plot follows Lilith, a treasure hunter with a questionable sense of direction, as she teams up with an unlikely crew of misfits. We have Claptrap, the annoyingly hilarious robot who talks way too much, Tiny Tina, a pint-sized demolition expert with a fondness for explosives and bunny ears, and Krieg, a psycho with a heart of gold (somewhere under all that insanity). The casting is almost as wacky as the plot is supposed to be, so we’ll have to see if they can pull it off.

This is a heist movie; enemies become friends, friends betray enemies, the usual stuff. With the bar for video game adaptations on the floor from Halo only to be shot to the moon by Fallout, how Borderlands will turn out is anyone’s guess.
