US Troops deploying to Cameroon

boko

US Troops are being deployed to Cameroon to help combat Boko Haram, the Islamic extremist group from Northern Nigeria that in March 2015 pledged it's allegiance to ISIS (BBC 7 March, 2015). The group is responsible for mass unrest in the region that has displaced 2.8 million people and has killed 17,000. It is estimated that the group has 7,000 to 10,000 members in the region. The Letter from President Obama can be seen below:

TEXT OF A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENTTO THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVESAND THE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE OF THE SENATE

October 14, 2015

Dear Mr. Speaker: (Dear Mr. President:)On October 12, 2015, approximately 90 U.S. Armed Forces personnel began deploying to Cameroon with the consent of the Government of Cameroon. This deployment is in advance of the deployment of additional U.S. Armed Forces personnel to Cameroon to conduct airborne intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations in the region. The total number of U.S. military personnel to be deployed to Cameroon is anticipated to be up to approximately 300. These forces are equipped with weapons for the purpose of providing their own force protection and security, and they will remain in Cameroon until their support is no longer needed.I directed the deployment of U.S. forces in furtherance of U.S. national security and foreign policy interests, and pursuant to my constitutional authority to conduct U.S. foreign relations and as Commander in Chief and Chief Executive.I am providing this report as part of my efforts to keep the Congress fully informed, consistent with the War Powers Resolution (Public Law 93-148). I appreciate the support of the Congress in this action.Sincerely,

BARACK OBAMA

While this is only 300 troops at this time, will it grow over the next 6 months? Let us know in the comments or on our Facebook.
