One of the most iconic and memorable recruiting slogans in the Marines' history, "The Few, The Proud, The Marines" has embedded itself into Marines and their culture over the last thirty years. However, that may soon change as the 2017 recruiting campaign begins.The new slogan will emphasize a focus on what Marines do. As Recruiting Command spokesman Lt. Col. John Caldwell told the Marine Times:
“’The Few, The Proud’ does a great job distinguishing ourselves from the other branches and making us prestigious to recruits, but it doesn’t say anything about what we do or why we exist,” Caldwell said. “We believe the new campaign products require a unique tagline to achieve the effort’s objectives.”
The first few ads are expected to air sometime between January and March. As of December, no new slogan had been developed.“The new ads will center on the irreducible essence of Marines, which is our fighting spirit — both at the individual and unit levels,” Caldwell said last month. “As with previous advertisements, we will use the narrative framework of the longer Marine Corps story, which includes the following three themes: We make Marines, we win our Nation's battles, and we develop quality citizens... In the new advertisements, the themes will be framed in the context of a fight, one we intend to win. Examples include the following: fighting self-doubt to become a Marine (we make Marines); fighting our nation's battles (we win our nation's battles), and fighting for what's right in our communities (we develop quality citizens).”Many people have expressed their displeasure at the change, but it remains to be seen if the new slogan will be any bit as good as it's predecessor. One thing is for sure, it's a hard act to follow, but stranger things have happened.If you could change the slogan, would you? What would you want instead?
