A soldier assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment has died after fatal injuries sustained during an airborne operation.He was one month away from getting out of the Army.Staff Sgt. Avonye John Cavon Chisolm, 26, was transported to the nearest military treatment facility then air-lifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia. He died on August 25th.Chisolm was assigned to Company E, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment out of Hunter Army Airfield in Ga. He was a Culinary Specialist Non-Commissioned Officer.

“Staff Sgt. Avonye Chisolm represented the best of our Ranger leaders. He had an impact on every Ranger in this Battalion through his tireless work ethic, positive attitude and contagious smile,” said Lt. Col. Robert S. Brown, Commander of 1/75.Chisolm had deployed five times in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.He was born August 1st, 1990 in Indianapolis, Indiana and enlisted in the U.S. Army in July of 2008.He attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Virginia.After basic and AIT he was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment after passing the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program in 2009. He transferred to 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment in September 2013 to serve as the culinary specialist NCO.He attended Airborne School, RASP, BLC, and several other professional schools.His awards include the Combat Action Badge, the Parachutist Badge, the Expert Rifle Marksmanship Badge, as well as several awards, including Joint Services Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and many others.Chisolm is survived by his father Harrell Chisol of Atlanta, Georgia and his grandmother Celestine Herbert of Charleston, South Carolina.Chisolm was not required to do the jump but did it anyway.“His loss will be felt across the organization and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time,” Lt. Col Brown said.
