Mortal Kombat: A Spoiler-Free Movie Review

The Mortal Kombat series has been around for a while. The first game was released in 1992 and has enjoyed immense staying power ever since. Earlier this month, a new edition was added to the saga. Below is a spoiler free (if not intentionally vague) review of the new cinematic venture into Mortal Kombat to help you decide to spend the money or not.[caption id="attachment_23431" align="alignnone" width="750"]

The Good

This movie features many fan favorite characters and dives much deeper into the origin of some. It boasts stunning visuals, and gory fatalities. Furthermore, it pays frequent fan service with classic call backs to memorable lines and moves from the game.I did not expect this to be a funny movie, but some moments genuinely got me. I found my self wheezing like I had been shadow kicked in the funny bone. There are some extremely charismatic actors giving accurate renditions of beloved characters. Plus, they really went all out with the costumes and sets. Finally, if you like gore, this movie delivers, in buckets.

The Bad

There are a few odd plot choices that lead to some groan-inducing moments. Some of the new character castings do not live up to their counterparts in the 1995 Paul Anderson film. As a result, the action tends to stall in between fights. The portrayal of the military is hackneyed, and ill conceived. You'll know exactly what I mean when you watch it. However, resist the urge to explain why things are wrong to your civilian friends.The ending is moderately satisfyingly, but I feel like the intent was to make a flashy prequel. That is to say, you can tell things were laid out for the sequel. Instead of trying to make a complete film now and building from that in the next one.

Is it worth watching Mortal Kombat?

Yes! Especially if you grew up playing the video games. For all the faults, this is a solid action/fantasy movie. Hopefully, they are able to correct some of the deficiencies in the next film. Regardless, it is still worth watching. Even if just to see some of your favorite characters go head-to-head and rip out each other's organs.
