This past week researchers were able to gain some ground on combatting one of the deadliest diseases to plague mankind. Cancer.Researchers at Stanford University found that injecting mice with an immune system stimulating fluid, directly into the tumor killed the tumors!“When we use these two agents together, we see the elimination of tumors all over the body,” said Ronald Levy, MD, professor of oncology. “This approach bypasses the need to identify tumor-specific immune targets and doesn’t require wholesale activation of the immune system or customization of a patient’s immune cells.”

Cancer has been a mystery for years with research not making much in the way of progress. The go-to treatments of radiation and chemotherapy take a lot out of the patient and seriously inhibit their quality of life. However, this new breakthrough could signal the end of cancer as we know it as long as the effects are deemed to be beneficial only. At this preliminary stage, the side-effects, if there are any, are still unknown.For the millions of Americans that not only suffer from cancer but for those they love as well, this new treatment option provides some hope. Hope, that there loved ones will not have to undergo painful, exhausting treatments that leave them sick and weak instead cancer will rear it's ugly head only to be beaten back.The research has, even more, promising predictions that after these agents destroy the tumor, the cells of the immune system will seek out similar tumors and destroy them as well. We could very well be on the verge of a cancer vaccine that makes cancer a thing of the past, a purely 20th-century problem.“I don’t think there's a limit to the type of tumor we could potentially treat, as long as it has been infiltrated by the immune system,” Levy said.
