The Pledge of Allegiance Project

In 1892, Francis Bellamy working for the Youth's Companion magazine wrote the Pledge of Allegiance as a way to sell flags to schools. The original text read; "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all".Many years have passed since then and words have been added, "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America..." or the famous "under God" line and despite the socialist leanings of the original author, the pledge has endured and solidified in and of itself a meaning all of its own, absent the views of its author."I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all"Something about those words, still give us chills when we say them. As we read, as we speak, as we hear these words our mind wanders and reflects upon the numerous men and women who gave their lives for the ideals of our great nation. They believed in this one nation. They believed in the idea that all who reside within our borders live with liberty and justice. These ideals are the cornerstone of our country.So while the Pledge of Allegiance may still be a controversial topic to some, it is not controversial to us.

The truth of the matter is that the greatest strength of our nation is our endless pursuit of the last six words. It drives us to continue the exceptional work we do in the world and here at home.It compels us to be better Americans today than we were yesterday.It is the promise that our allegiance to you, our neighbors, our fellow Americans that we will always seek liberty and justice for you, as you seek it for us.We have won the lottery to be born in this land, and despite our nation's youth, we have created a nation the likes of which the world has never seen before.E Pluribus Unum.
