US Military Replaces Humvee with JLTV

Move over, Humvee. The US Military is replacing the Humvee with The Lockheed Martin's Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV). The JLTV meets current standards for IED-Protected vehicles, but it's 40% lighter than the competition.

Scott Greene, vice president of ground vehicles in Lockheed Martin's Missiles and Fire Control business, stated that, "In addition to being helo-transportable and mine-resistant, our JLTV design also brings another important advantage to the battlefield: improved mobility. Its lightweight, agile design will help soldiers to evade enemies and avoid threats." This means that soldiers can now be protected from powerful blasts, but still be transported by vertical lift; a brand new mobility option for the Army and Marine Corps.The U.S. Army and Marine Corps had done previous tests that showed the JLTV can be transported by CH-47 and CH-53 helicopters.

Lockheed Martin's JLTV also passed its blast tests with flying colors, which used explosions commonly tested against existing mine-resistant vehicles.

Lockheed Martin is pursuing the JLTV program, an effort to redefine the limits of mobility, protection, and payload to troops that are deployed. By introducing both replacements for and compliments to aging existing vehicles (such as the Humvee), the JLTV program will create a common family of vehicles; these consist of the Combat Tactical Vehicle and Combat Support Vehicle, both with several variants and companion trailers.
