Beirut Bombing: Unraveling the Facts

A massive explosion rocked the city of Beirut Tuesday, August 4th 2020. The blast was reportedly in the port district of the Lebanese capital. Lebanon's health minister, Hamad Hasan, has confirmed there are multiple injuries and extensive property damage. There are reports of a second, smaller explosion. However, those have not been confirmed.The suspected bombing sent a giant mushroom cloud into the sky. This spanned several hundred feet, and could be seen for miles. However, videos show an initial large plume of smoke. Beirut attack[/caption]Information is scarce, and the situation is still developing. So far, no one has claimed responsibility. Additionally, the Lebanese government has not released a list of suspects, or their possible motives for the attack. Furthermore, there will be no confirmation on casualties for quite some time.A large rescue effort is currently underway. The authorities are proceeding cautiously, because of the risk of follow on attacks. Verdict soon to come on killing of ex-PM Rafik Hariri

One of the possible motives could be to influence the decision of an upcoming trial. This Friday, a UN tribunal is set to give its verdict on the trial of 4 accused suspects in the murder of Hariri. A car bomb claimed the life of Hariri in 2005, and has been a huge source of tension and political strife for nearly 15 years.We send our condolences to the victims of the Beirut attacks.
