This weekend we have honored those who have fallen in the most recent of our conflicts. We looked to them as examples and icons that represented each fallen warrior for each conflict. Today we honor the man widely regarded as the first to give his life for the idea of liberty, for the idea that is the United States of America, Crispus Attucks.Crispus Attucks was a stevedore or rather longshoreman, and whaler. A man of his own means, humble as they were the man known as Crispus Attucks knew a righteous cause when he saw one.Libertas.The presence of British troops in Boston did not have the desired effect of...calming the colonists down. Their livelihoods taken through unjust taxation by the King, the colonists were in no mood to be placated by the British and certainly not in any mood to be intimidated by the presence of British regulars.

Crispus Attucks

Crispus Attucks, out in front, bravely facing down the most advanced army, the largest empire the world had ever seen. Yet he was not deterred. As the melee began and the British fired their volleys killing many, yet the first to lay down his life, Crispus Attucks. Struck by two ricocheted rounds, Attucks was killed. The Boston Massacre as it's known became a rallying cry for Patriots. As we remember all of the fallen this weekend, we remember this, wherever they came from, whatever their occupation, whatever their ethnic origins, when they shed their blood for those to the left and right, for this nation, they are no longer strangers to us. They are family.Remember Crispus Attucks, the first man to die for this nation, for the idea of liberty, for men and women he would never know, as his life was cut short. How great is the love in one's heart, that they would give up their life for one they knew not, or those who had not yet been born? Words do not describe that kind of love and devotion.Read more stories of American Grit:
