The same group that brought you Bourbiz, has launched a new programed aimed at helping service members. The Military Families Food Market is a direct response to the food struggles our troops have faced during COVID-19.The first food market is set to open May 21, 2021. This will provide vital aide to those serving at the many bases in the D.C. Metro area. The only requirement will be showing a valid military ID. The organizers from Veteran Success Resource Group stated the service members, or family member, will be given two bags to fill with groceries for free. The market will also offer 30 minute classes about how to apply for additional benefits.
The Military Families Food Market has partnered with Grunt Style to open a second food market in San Antonio, Texas, on June 12.
This pandemic has been especially hard for military families. For example, a family of 4 living on an E3's salary would barely be able to scrape by to begin with. Pair that with a struggling economy, and it is trouble.To make matters worse, some troops have voiced hesitation over applying for assistance programs for fear of repercussions or embarrassment. Often times, a command may see applying for food stamps, or WIC (Women, Infants, and Children program) as a failure of financial planning. When in reality, many spouses have simply just had hours cut, and bills have fallen behind.Additionally, those children that would have qualified for free school lunches are at home for virtual learning. Thus, increasing the families grocery bill. A lot of military families would just suffer in silence, but they shouldn't have to.
Scott Davidson, the co-founder of Bourbiz and the Military Families Program, has teamed up with celebrity Chef Andre Rush, and many others to bring this project forward. Chef Rush, a US Army veteran, and White House chef for four administrations, has publicly spoken about his own struggles going without food. Davidson, a Purple Heart recipient, has emphasized the importance of removing the stigma of asking for help. To find out more, or to help, click here.
