Here are five news stories you need to know for Friday, June 16, 2017.

  1. Pentagon to send 5,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. It stands to be the largest deployment of American forces in Donald Trump’s young presidency.
  2. Two escaped inmates, suspected of killing the guards who were transporting them, were held at gunpoint by a rural Tennessee homeowner whose vehicle they were trying to steal. Donnie Rowe and Ricky Dubose, are now in police custody.
  3. After about 30 hours of deliberation jurors told the judge that they couldn’t reach a unanimous decision in the actor’s sexual assault trial. The judge advised them to keep deliberating.
  4. Online juggernaut and veteran employer, Amazon is buying Whole Foods in a deal valued at about $13.7 billion, including debt.
  5. After surviving one fall over Niagara Falls with no protection, he didn't survive the second trip over the falls. This time he at least attempted it in a plastic ball for protection.
