Look, we're not here to downplay George Washington, he is the father of our country and managed to coordinate the "rebel scum" (SPACE FORRRCE) that we were, and beat the most advanced, most powerful empire the world had ever seen. However, let's talk about our War Father, Captain Samuel Nicholas, the first commandant of the United States Marine Corps. Semper Fi, Tun Tavern! Samuel knew just the right place to start recruiting his bunch of miscreants that would become the United States Marine Corps. A bar.So there we were, in the fever pitch of the fight for our independence, the Continental Army had their role, and the Continental Marines had theirs. Lord Dunmore, a cheeky British fellow had stored up large amounts of provisions and arms at Nassau to aid the British in their unholy war against the colonies. What a bunch of assholes. So with fire in their eyes and alcohol in their bellies the sailors of the ship USS Alfred under the command of Commodore Esek Hopkins and the Marines, under the command of Captain Samuel Nicholas, set sail for Nassau.

Samuel Nicholas

Marines are the owners of the amphibious assault. By stealth or strength, they seize beachheads and fight where the sea meets the land. Commodore Hopkins (he used to be a "privateer" which most people often regarded as pirates) placed Captain Nicholas in command of the landing party of over 200 Marines. If anyone has had any interaction with even one Marine, you know they can be a handful. We had 200 of them all together, ready to fight and pillage the stores of the British Empire. On March 3rd, 1776 Captain Nicholas and his Marines assaulted Lord Dunmore's position and captured everything, without a fight. This is usually the best course of action for the enemies of Marines, Don't fight back, because if you do, they will kill you dead!

Samuel Nicholas

This historic moment marked the United States Marine Corps beginning as THE preeminent amphibious fighting force around the world. A tradition started by Captain Samuel Nicholas, the War Father of the United States Marine Corps.Read more stories of American Grit:
