Recently, a 14-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy ran away from a Florida children’s group home. However, when officers would approach, the two would continue to flee. Despite the boy needing insulin injections, the juveniles still fled. Afterwards, they allegedly broke into a home and stole the owner's firearms. A passer-by called police after hearing glass break. When police responded, the pair began to open fire on the deputies. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood stated, "This went on for hours. This wasn't a split second, we exchange gunfire. We were out here from 7:30 until 9 o'clock until we returned fire."The following video is body camera footage from an on scene deputy. Although the footage has been released by Volusia County Sheriff, viewer discretion is still advised.https://youtu.be/MigjZCt842EPolice say the two juveniles fired a shotgun and an AK-47 multiple times. Eventually, the 14-year-old girl came out and began to target deputies who implored her to surrender. One deputy can be heard saying, "Please don't make me do this."Despite the best effort of the deputies, she continued to advance. As a result, she was shot several times and was taken to a hospital where she is now considered to be in stable condition. Additionally, the 12-year-old was apprehended un-injured, but was taken to a hospital for his insulin dependency."Deputies did everything they could to deescalate, and they almost lost their lives to a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old," says Sheriff Chitwood.

Chitwood stated, "I don't know what to say. Where have we gone wrong that a 12-year-old and 14-year-old think it's OK to take on law enforcement. What the hell is the department of juvenile justice doing sending them to places that can't handle them?"Stay tuned to American Grit for more news, stories and features.
