I don’t think anyone really needs an excuse to eat a donut, but in case you do, National Donut Day is tomorrow, June 2nd! You're welcomeMarked each year on the first Friday of June, it’s been celebrated since the Great Depression. In WWI, the Salvation Army flew volunteers to France to help out injured troops. After seeing how miserable they were, they made the most of what they had--sugar, flour, and oil--and made the men donuts. It instantly lifted their spirits. After the war was over, the Chicago Chapter of the Salvation Army revived the tradition to bring back cheer and raise funds within the community. It was such a hit, it was considered a national holiday since.

Where to get free food

  • Buy a drink at Dunkin Donuts, and they'll give you a free classic donut of your choice.
  • If you're on the eastern side of the United States, you can get a free donut of your choice at Duck Donuts with any purchase. Keep your receipt, because you'll also get a coupon for "Buy One Get One Free 1/2 Dozen"!
  • Krispy Kreme is participating too, and the best part is, you can just claim your one free donut--no purchase necessary!

Make Your Own

If you'd rather have some freshly fried donuts, we got you! Get some premade biscuit dough, heat up your deep fryer or pot of oil to about 350 degrees, and fry each piece of dough for about 1-2 minutes on each side. You can sprinkle some sugar and call it a day, but if that isn't enough for you, check these quick and easy recipes:

Maple Bacon Donut Holes

While you're letting your donut holes cool off, mix some maple syrup up with some sugar and milk to create the glaze. Fry up some bacon while you have your deep fryer on, and voila!

Alcoholic Glaze

Once you've pulled out your donuts, brush some Honey Bourbon Whiskey on top. Then, take either bourbon, rum, or Rumchata and mix it with powdered sugar to create your glaze. Go ahead and play with the ratio, adding more powdered sugar if you want a thicker glaze. Dip your donuts in, and chow down!

Photo credit:[/caption]For this particular recipe, it might be easier if you make some donut holes. Take a straw and poke a hole, making a well into the dough. Using the straw, pour some Irish Creme Liquor.
