NRA Vows to Fight Gun Control Despite Bankruptcy

President Biden recently announced his plan to take "executive actions targeting gun violence in the wake of mass shootings in Boulder, Colorado and Orange County, California over the past month."These included taking aim at so called "ghost guns." As well as banning arm braces, and implementing new "red flag laws."The National Rifle Association (NRA) immediately went to work against these measures. The group began retweeting posts from elected officials voicing their opposition to these plans. Additionally, going as far as saying, "Biden is dismantling the 2nd Amendment."However, the NRA is in the middle of a massive internal battle. In early 2021, he NRA filed for bankruptcy protection. Additionally, it revealed plans to leave New York, and reincorporate in Texas. Nevertheless, matters are still very complicated. New York’s attorney general brought legal action against the NRA, and is actively seeking for it to be dissolved. Claiming "top executives illegally diverted tens of millions of dollars for lavish personal trips."NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre, recently conceded that he should have disclosed the "yacht trips he took that were paid by contractors and vendors." He also admitted that he "kept his organization’s recent bankruptcy filing secret from almost all its senior officials, including its general counsel, chief financial officer and top lobbyist."As a result of alleged mismanagement, donations to the group have plummeted. Thus, severely limiting their lobbying power. Although, some believe the NRA is not out yet. A writer for Time magazine stated they believe the NRA could still block these measures. Citing the NRA still maintains good relationships with key players who could oppose new legislation.

What does all of this mean for gun owners?

It means we must pay attention to new developments and voice our opinions to our representatives. It also means there is an opportunity for new organizations to fill the void left by the reeling NRA.In a perfect world, there would be no criminals. No one would threaten our families. We wouldn't have to diligently train to protect our lives. However, this is not a perfect world. Americans established the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution to secure the rights to keep and bear arms. As a result, Americans are the largest private gun owners in the world. We have as many gun owners as the U.K. and Australia have citizens, combined. This makes the way we own and regulate firearms a fiercely debated matter.
