Fuck. This shit annoys me. Lack of informed consent. A jury in Dallas blocked a dad's request to NOT have his 7-year old son go through gender reassignment as his ex-wife (and pediatrician) wished for, which included not just puberty blockers, but cross-sex hormones as well. So the 7-year-old son will be on puberty blockers and be on cross-sex hormones to fully transition as he (for now) and his mother want.Look. Full stop goddamnit. I don't care who you are, or what you believe in. No 7 year old can give informed consent. The mother diagnosing and prescribing such things, to me, is a conflict of interest. She seems to be vehemently pushing for this and saying she knows what's best, but again, 7-year olds cannot give informed consent.Yes, all the court experts ruled that the child preferred to go by Luna. Ok cool, that's fine. Live your truth and shit. Puberty blockers allegedly don't seem to have any long term effect, but cross-sex hormones that will drastically affect the child's development through adolescence? In "Adolescent Maturity and the Brain: The Promise and Pitfalls of Neuroscience Research in Adolescent Health Policy" we are reminded that,"In the last decade, a growing body of longitudinal neuroimaging research has demonstrated that adolescence is a period of continued brain growth and change."*gasp* What? The brain changes and develops as we age? Especially in adolescence? NO WAY (obvious sarcasm is obvious, or at least should be).So one can logically conclude based on the above statement from the study, that a 7-year-old's brain and cognitive function aren't where they need to be when making life-altering decisions. Their brain is going to continue to change and grow as do their wants and desires. The mother is basically telling us that a 7-year-old is fully aware and cognizant of the ramifications of this decision. That at 7 years old her son can understand the risks of altering his body and brain chemistry.Maybe her 7-year-old is really smart. Awesome, I still don't trust most 7-year-olds when they say they brushed their teeth, much less understand the risks involved with unnaturally altering their body chemistry.I'm not here to say being trans is right or wrong. That's not my job. I'm not a doctor, I'm not a psychologist or psychiatrist, I don't have one single credential to qualify me to talk on that. I'm here to say that based on the above article and the fact that our brains don't stop developing until roughly 25 years old, and knowing full well that the brain goes through many changes as we age and become fully matured adults (in the sense of fully grown and developed physiology) that it is fucking horseshit, to push something this life-altering on your child whether they say they want it or not.Informed consent is a thing. A thing that's being ignored here in what more and more just looks like a spat between ex-husband and ex-wife.Children do not have the capability to truly give informed consent to definitive life-altering changes being advocated here. I don't care that the mother is a pediatrician, ethically, in fact, I find it odd that she's not being investigated for an ethics violation regarding this whole ordeal. In case we didn't get our point across amidst the ranting and raving here it is;We don't care what you do with your life, once you're an adult, but you cannot expect me to believe a 7-year-old is capable, in this instance, of giving informed consent.
