Belgian Federal Police are conducting a massive manhunt for a Belgian soldier they believe to be dangerous. Jurgen Conings, a marksmanship instructor, expressed extreme political beliefs and as a result, has recently threatened multiple people. Among these were virologist Marc Van Ranst, who led Belgium's public health response to COVID-19. Police opted to place the Van Ranst family in a secure location.Prior to his disappearance on Monday, Conings, 46, was able to steal an array of military weapons. These included four missile launchers from a Belgian Army camp.Belgian Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne told VTM Nieuws, "There are indications that he is violent and, in the last 24 hours, evidence has emerged that the man poses an acute threat."Belgian Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo, confirms that Conings has been on government radar for quite some time. Yet, he still asks how this could be possible. De Croo remarks that the lack of awareness the government has imposed onto the situation is “unacceptable,” as authorities continue their manhunt for Conings. De Croo insists that a proposal will be made to ensure that an event such as this will never happen again. Although authorities have recovered Conings vehicle, they are still on the hunt. Belgian federal prosecutor Wenke Roggen stated, “four missile launchers and ammunition were found in it.”Conings is still thought to have other weapons and a bullet proof vest. Authorities urge the public to not interact with Conings. Stating that he may be unstable. Police stating if any individuals should see him, they should alert the authorities. Furthermore, they highly encourage Conings to turn himself in. This comes on the heels of a US Army trainee hijacking a bus full of children.
