Oh man. I bet the Marines on board the USS Boxer were super excited that they got to use this new toy to down the Iranian drone yesterday as it got a little too close for comfort. The Marines put the brand new Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System (LMADIS) to use against what we're guessing was a shitty Wal-Mart drone that had to have one of those old disposable cameras attached via zip tie that have that little winding wheel and can only take like 23 pictures.Granted it was a high tech weapon against an undoubtedly a really shitty cheap ass drone, but the cool thing is this...we've kinda gamed the game on this shit with the threat of "drone swarms".Iran and other countries such as China have gone towards low tech mass quantity weapons in order to overwhelm current defense systems onboard ship. With the Marine Corps using the LMADIS to engage and successfully down a cheap-ass drone, it's going to be more difficult for them to overwhelm via drone swarm, our surface ships and any other surface targets that have a vehicle with the LMADIS equipped. While the engagement raises tensions in an area where we really don't want war, the success of the LMADIS system puts the enemy on notice that there is still a deterrent and the countless hundreds of dollars they spent on this low tech shit is not going to work out the way they thought it would. The big gain here for the United States is that our research and development was not entirely in vain, while the strategy of overwhelming our defense systems with a bunch of cheap, low tech drones or even possibly missiles is not going to be as successful as they once thought it was.It probably puts China on notice at least a little bit as they've vested heavily in cheaper conventional warhead ICBMs to attack our carrier battle groups over the horizon. Lasers and electronic jamming usually work quicker than rocket motors...at least we hope, right?
