West Point Pillow Fight Continues

Photo via YouTube video[/caption]We posted yesterday about an insane pillow fight at West Point that left 2% of the incoming freshmen class with concussions along with other serious injuries. Today, the superintendent of West Point, Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen, confirmed the details of the story that was reported yesterday saying that an investigation is underway and "appropriate action" will be taken when it wraps up.Right now, there are no plans to cancel next year's pillow fight, a tradition that has been a part of West Point for nearly 100 years, but I suspect that if the event happens next year, it will be a much different version. Expect there to be much tougher controls on the event with complete safety briefings and pre-pillow fight checks of equipment.If you haven't seen the video of the pillow fight, it's pretty insane. Watch this video and then remember that we are told that this was a supervised event.

From the Army Times:The U.S. Military Academy's superintendent took responsibility for the pillow fight that left nearly 2 percent of the academy's freshman class with concussions last month, saying in a Saturday statement that "[a]lthough the vast majority of the class appears to have maintained the spirit of the event, it is apparent that a few did not."

Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen's remarks confirmed many of the details on the Aug. 20 event first reported Friday by the New York Times: Medical personnel evaluated 30 cadets after a pillow fight designed to build camaraderie within the plebe class after "a tough first summer," Caslen said. Two dozen were diagnosed with concussions; other injuries included a broken nose, dislocated shoulder and broken cheekbone.All the injured cadets remained at the school and have returned to duty, Caslen said.
