The situation in North Korea continues to escalate. U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer bombers escorted by fighter jets flew in international airspace over waters east of North Korea on Saturday in a show of force."This is the farthest north of the Demilitarized Zone any U.S. fighter or bomber aircraft have flown off North Korea's coast in the 21st century, underscoring the seriousness with which we take (North Korea's) reckless behavior," said Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White."This mission is a demonstration of U.S. resolve and a clear message that the President has many military options to defeat any threat," White. "We are prepared to use the full range of military capabilities to defend the U.S. homeland and our allies."The patrols came after officials and experts said a small earthquake near North Korea's nuclear test site on Saturday was probably not man-made, easing fears Pyongyang had exploded another nuclear bomb just weeks after its last one. The Pentagon said the mission was designed to show the many military options President Donald Trump has given the grave threat presented by the North Korean nuclear program.https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/911265133279809536These events take place after a tenuous one day period of insults between President Trump and Kim Jong Un. Trump told the UN on Tuesday the U.S. would "totally destroy" North Korea if it forced to defend the U.S. or its allies. North Korean leadership reorted with insults and more planned testing.https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/911175246853664768North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho's retorted that the show of force with the B-1B Lancer bombers escorted by fighter jets flying in international airspace over waters east of North Korea, was a show of force that the Pentagon may regret: "Through such a prolonged and arduous struggle, now we are finally only a few steps away from the final gate of completion of the state nuclear force," Ri told the annual gathering of world leaders. As of this writing, both sides seem to be content flexing their muscles and trying to one up the other. We'll keep you posted on any developments as they happen.
