We all know Corpsman love their Marines. Edward Clyde Benfold was no exception. These salty sea-going "docs" are known for their prowess at saving the lives of their brethren. Edward though is known for that and a little something extra. While serving in Korea, Edward gave the ultimate sacrifice to ensure his Marines lived.During the night of September 5th, 1952 the Marines position "Outpost Bruce" in western Korea came under intense attack. First from indirect fire, artillery, and mortars, then the ground assault came. In the darkness, the enemy descended upon the outpost. Heavy enemy fire erupted all around them. Edward Clyde Benfold did not hesitate as he left cover, moving from fighting position to fighting position, ensuring his Marines were tended to. Under the onslaught, he moved diligently, with purpose and intent. He and his Marines would whether this battle, even if it cost him his own life.As he did this, the platoon area he was in came under attack from both front and rear, they were in for a fight now. Edward Clyde Benfold made his way to the ridgeline, exposing himself to enemy fire AGAIN, there he saw two Marines in a crater. He moved towards them to ensure their well-being. As Benfold reached the crater, the enemy did as well, tossing two grenades into the makeshift fighting position. Without hesitation and with little regard for his own well being, Benfold reached down, grabbed both grenades, one in each hand and charged the enemy. He pushed each grenade into the chests of an attacker. For his actions, Edward was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.
