The 4th of July is quickly approaching, and you know there will be a lot of discussion about the US Flag Code. For reference, the “Flag Code” is located in Title 4 of the United States Code and the section of Title 36. It gives instructions on how the flag should be displayed on various occasions. As well as, guidance on how proper respect is to be shown for the flag. However, there are a few things you might not know. For instance, the code states, "The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything."A random bit of trivia to stump your friends, but on to more serious matters. The Congressional Research Center (CRC) states,

"... the Flag Code does not prescribe any penalties for non-compliance nor does it include enforcement provisions; rather the Code functions simply as a guide to be voluntarily followed by civilians and civilian groups."Although, this was not always the case.In 1989, Congress enacted the Flag Protection Act. This allowed courts to impose a fine and/or up to one year in prison for violations. A year later, the Supreme Court ruled it to be unconstitutional. However, old glory would not go down without a fight.Read also: Protester dies after inhaling fumes from burning American flag

U.S. Rep. Steve Womack (R-AR) has recently introduced legislation to update the Flag Code. The Flag Code Modernization Act of 2021, H.R. 4212, would allow postal workers to wear the flag on their uniform. As well as, implement other modifications supported by the American Legion.Enjoy your Independence Day and display the Stars and Stripes correctly, and proudly! Long may she wave.
