The Battle Begins:

Latrease's journey through the haze of uncertainty began with a diagnosis that would change her life forever. In the summer of 2019, she received the news that she had breast cancer. Undaunted, Latrease took on this challenge with unwavering determination. She underwent a bilateral mastectomy, the scars of which became a symbol of her. But her battle wasn't just in the medical realm; it was a dual fight. As an airman, the mission always came first, but everything she did was driven by her love for her two sons, who were 9 and 7 at the time. Throughout the challenging process of rehabilitation, her two children became her pillars of strength and support.

Faith and Family:

In the darkest moments of her battle, Latrease found solace in her faith and the unwavering support of her family. These pillars of strength helped her navigate the treacherous path of cancer, and she emerged victorious. Today, cancer-free, she carries a profound sense of gratitude and a desire to pay it forward. Latrease is on a mission to mentor and provide guidance to other young women currently fighting the same battle. Her life is now filled with joy, as she eagerly anticipates the arrival of a miracle baby boy in just a few weeks.

A Miracle Baby and a Second Chance:

In a recent conversation, Latrease spoke about the unexpected joy of welcoming a miracle baby, Rico. As the smoke of her battle with cancer cleared, she found herself experiencing a restoration of her womanhood. She describes the feeling of being alive and breathing, embracing her second chance at life.

But what does this second opportunity mean to her? Latrease explains that it's about taking life one day at a time, living by faith, and going with the flow. She approaches life with a lighter heart, free from the burden of the past. Her transition from military life to becoming a stay-at-home mom has presented its unique set of challenges. In the military, she was accustomed to structure and guidance, but now she's finding her own way. Despite the change, she acknowledges the support she continues to receive from the VA, which has seamlessly picked up where the military left off.

VA Support and Transitioning:

Latrease highlights the importance of seeking help from the VA during the transition from military to civilian life. Her positive experience with the VA in Texas, where she currently resides, is a testament to the valuable resources and support they offer to veterans. She acknowledges that transitioning can be a daunting process, and the VA's involvement can be instrumental in bridging the gap.

Advocacy and Breast Surveillance:

Latrease's commitment to breast cancer awareness is unwavering. After her bilateral mastectomy, she undergoes regular breast surveillance through MRIs every six months to ensure her continued well-being. She passionately advocates for self-exams, emphasizing the importance of early detection as a life-saving measure.

Support and Gratitude:

Throughout her journey, Latrease found immense support from various groups and organizations, including a breast cancer support group at Brooke Army Medical Center located in San Antonio Texas.

Conclusion:

Latrease's story is one of courage, resilience, and hope. It is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the importance of unwavering support during challenging times. Her journey, from a breast cancer diagnosis to a miracle baby and a life filled with purpose, is a celebration of American grit. As Latrease emphatically puts it, "Just please do your daily exam. Tthe earlier you can detect if there is something, it can really save your life. It's 2023 and I'm here to be able to talk to Grunt Style , I'm still able to raise my children & Just live life that easy".
