The Dedication of Volunteer Firefighters

It breaks my heart to know that the numbers of volunteer firefighters are dwindling in the United States. Volunteer Firefighters make up the majority of firefighters in this nation and they stand ready to answer any emergency. Unlike professional firefighters, many volunteer departments don't have set hours that they work. Instead, they are on call 24/7 and are expected to answer the call if able. Why do they do this? Because they love their community, they love the people around them.Growing up, I always admired firefighters. When you see the flames in the distance and you know that there are people consciously choosing to go into that building to look for those did not get out in time, it gives you a sense of peace and safety. There is something about that particular brand of courage, similar to seeing a soldier rescue his fallen comrade despite the withering enemy fire that warms my heart. The men and women that perform these acts possess a special kind of courage and selflessness that is rarely seen.

For many interested in the fire service, volunteer departments are a good way to test the waters and see if they actually like the job and if they can handle it. The volunteer departments usually pay for training and equipment for the new firefighters. So why are the numbers dwindling? Are we losing the love of community? Are we losing the desire for a challenge? Are we so focused on ourselves that we've forgotten about serving our communities? I don't think that's it at all. I think Americans are always good at caring for their neighbors, just look at how Texas responded during Hurricane Harvey.So what is the issue then? I think it's simply a matter of public relations. People don't know all of the benefits of being part of a volunteer fire department.
