The Department of Veterans Affairs recently stated they "will begin processing disability claims Aug. 2 for asthma, rhinitis and sinusitis on a presumptive basis based on presumed particulate matter exposures during military service in Southwest Asia and certain other areas — if these conditions manifested within 10 years of a qualifying period of military service."This is a huge step in the fight for health care for those exposed to burn pits. As well as Veterans suffering from other toxic exposures. Denis McDonough, Secretary of Veterans Affairs, said, "I announced my intent to initiate rulemaking on May 27 to consider adding respiratory conditions to the list of chronic disabilities."Additionally, McDonough remarked, “Through this process I determined that the evidence provided was sufficient to establish presumptions of service connection for these three respiratory conditions. This is the right decision, and VA will continue to use a holistic approach in determining toxic exposure presumptives moving forward.”If you are looking to file a claim, take the following steps:Veterans, or survivors, applying for the first time, file a VA Form 21-526EZ. If reapplying, use the VA Form 20-0995.You can also go to Airborne Hazards and Burn Pit Exposures - Public Health (va.gov). This will have information on the new particulate presumptives. If you have never applied for benefits, visit VA.gov or call 800-827-1000. This toll-free number is an easy way to find information about the process.Stay tuned to American Grit for more news, stories and updates. Read also: Former VA Secretary, Slams Handling of Burn Pits
