Bowe Bergdahl Speaks
The Deserter (we all know that is what he is) Bowe Bergdahl has given his first media interview since he was released from his stay with a Taliban affiliated group in Afghanistan. His comments aired today in an episode of the podcast "Serial", a spin off of the public radio show, "This American Life". In the first episode of the new season, the show host and creator Sara Koenig says that they will be relying heavily on 25 hours of recorded phone calls between Bergdahl and Mark Boal. Boal is a filmmaker who began interviewing Bergdahl shortly after he was released by his hosts. From the Washington Post:
Bergdahl, comparing himself to a fictional action hero, said he decided to collect intelligence and look for the Taliban before turning himself in as a way of limiting the amount of trouble he faced.“Doing what I did is me saying that I am like, I don’t know, Jason Bourne…. I had this fantastic idea that I was going to prove to the world that I was the real thing,” Bergdahl said. “You know, that I could be what it is that all those guys out there that go to the movies and watch those movies, they all want to be that, but I wanted to prove that I was that.”
Yes he compared himself to Jason Bourne. Bergdahl's attorney, Eugene Fidell, released a statement praising the first episode of the podcast. His statement reads:
“We have asked from the beginning that everyone withhold judgment on Sgt. Bergdahl’s case until they know the facts,” the statement said. “The Serial podcast, like the preliminary hearing conducted in September, is a step in the right direction. We hope the Army will now do its part to advance public understanding by releasing Lt. Gen. Kenneth S. Dahl’s report, including the transcript of his interview of Sgt. Bergdahl.”
Are the facts of the case that Bowe Bergdahl fancied himself a fictional super secret spy and that by abandoning his post and his brothers that he would somehow show the world what kind of a bad ass he is? Are those the facts that Mr. Fidell is talking about? Here are some facts that we know. 6 heroes died searching for Bowe Bergdahl. The guy who was out pretending to be Jason Bourne. These are the facts that I'm sure Mr. Fidell doesn't want to deal with. Here are the facts that Bergdahl doesn't want to discuss.
Staff Sergeant Clayton Bowen, 29, of San Antonio, Texas.
Private First Class Morris Walker, 23, of Chapel Hill, N.C.SSG Bowen and PFC Walker were killed in Paktika Province on August 18, 2009 by a roadside bomb while trying to find Bergdahl.
Staff Sergeant Kurt Curtiss, 27, of Murray, Utah.SSG Curtiss died August 26, 2009 in Paktika Province after being shot while supporting Afghan security forces.
2nd Lieutenant Darryn Andrews, 34, of Dallas, Texas.2LT Andrews died on September 4, 2009 in Paktika Province after his vehicle was attacked by an IED and RPG.
Staff Sergeant Michael Murphrey, 25, of Snyder, Texas.SSG Murphrey died September 6, 2009 in Paktika Province after being wounded by an IED.
Private First Class Matthew Martinek, 20, of DeKalb, IL.PFC Martinek was seriously wounded on September 4, 2009 in Paktika Province when his vehicle was struck by an IED. He was evacuated to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany but he did not survive his wounds. He died on September 11, 2009.While Bergdahl's attorney wants everyone to wait for the facts to come out at trial, we do know these facts. He walked off his post and he put people at risk. Thinking that you are some kind of action hero like Jason Bourne is not going to be reason enough to explain his actions.[mwi-cat-listing cat="94" ppp="4" cols="4" desc="false" type="view" btn_color="black" ]
