What started as a normal commute turned quickly into a dangerous encounter. A student at Jadavpur University had booked an Uber with her friend, but things took a turn for the worse after the first drop-off had been made. The driver began taking a strange route at a fast pace. The woman argued with her driver about the route until he sped past her drop point. She recounted the incident for The Telegraph as follows:[caption id="attachment_4944" align="aligncenter" width="600"]

"I realized that his attitude had changed all of a sudden after my friend got off. He was now driving rashly and going wherever he wanted. He swerved the car left and right several times as we approached the Bijan Bhawan traffic island, around 2km from where my friend had got off the car.I asked the driver why he was driving this way but he kept quiet. When he suddenly tried to take a left turn... I firmly told him to stay on Broadway Road.I was apprehensive about the change in the driver's behavior but did not panic. I had a picture of the driver on my phone and I could report him to the authorities...As soon as the cab reached the Sen Mahasay bus stop... I asked the driver to take a left turn into the lane leading to my house. He told me that since my address wasn't showing on his GPS map, he would drop me wherever he wished.
Speeding down a deserted road, the cab driver flew into a rage and threatened his passenger: "Akdom chup! Toke kidnap kore rape kore debo" (Shut up, or I’ll rape you). But rather than shrinking in fear, the 27 year old college student prepared to fight. The first thought in her head?
"I won't be a victim and be found dead in the bushes by the roadside."
As soon as the driver began to pull over, she delivered her first blow, and jumped out of the car. She attacked again when he lunged at her a second time.
"I had taken self-defense lessons in school around 15 years ago and all that training suddenly came in handy. I remembered that I had to hit him hard on his shin bone to stop him and kick the back of his knees to make him fall... I mustered all my strength and targeted his shin bone and the back of his knees. He seemed stunned by my fightback and I ran. My tormentor tried to stop me by getting into the car and reversing at speed but I jumped out of the way. He sped away as a car's headlights appeared in the distance."
The woman reported her driver to the police and Uber shortly thereafter; he was promptly arrested, and has been suspended from the cab service.
