Irreverent Warriors, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing veteran suicide, is making waves with its unique approach to mental health. Forget somber support groups and hushed tones; Irreverent Warriors rallies veterans through humor, camaraderie, and the shared experience of, well, wearing silkies.

Their main event, the Silkies Hike, is exactly what you’re thinking it is; a city-wide trek in extra shmedium military short shorts, fostering connection and laughter along the way. But it's obviously not just about the attire. These hikes are carefully orchestrated to create a friendly place where veterans can let their guard down, reconnect with their brothers and sisters in arms, and remember the power of their shared experiences.

Why Silkies?

The choice of silkies is deliberate, serving as a playful icebreaker and a symbol of unity.  These unassuming shorts, which leave very little to the imagination in a very comical way, often relegated to the gym or barracks, take on a new meaning in the context of the hike. They become a badge of honor, a shared joke, and a visible reminder that these veterans are not alone.

More Than Just a Hike

While the hikes are the cornerstone of their efforts, Irreverent Warriors is much more than an organizer of quirky events; they provide a lifeline for veterans struggling with the invisible wounds of war. The organization fosters a sense of community, reminding veterans that they have a network of support to turn to when times get tough. Since its inception, Irreverent Warriors has touched the lives of countless veterans, creating a ripple effect of positive change. The organization's impact is irrefutable:

Breaking down stigma -By encouraging open conversations about mental health in a lighthearted setting, Irreverent Warriors helps dismantle the stigma often associated with seeking help.

Building connections - The hikes foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie, reminding veterans that they are part of a larger community that understands their struggles.

Providing resources -Irreverent Warriors connects veterans with vital resources, ensuring they have access to the support they need.

Saving lives - By fostering connection and providing support, Irreverent Warriors plays a crucial role in preventing veteran suicide.
