As the late great Patches O'Houlihan said;"Remember, dodgeball is a sport of violence, exclusion and degradation. So, when you're picking players in gym class, remember to pick the bigger, stronger kids for your team. That way you can gang up on the weaker ones, like Winston here."I get it, the kid that got molly whopped with the ball got a concussion, but you know...it's dodgeball. That's almost as ridiculous as suing someone for assault for getting water in your eye during a water polo match, ok maybe I'm being a bit hyperbolic, but to CHARGE A 10-year OLD WITH ASSAULT...I'm definitely not the only one being hyperbolic here.Don't get it twisted, I'm not in favor of young kids getting targetted by other children and having their brains scattered by high-velocity rubber balls crashing into their cranial units, but for shit's sake...assault? Yes the child in question, Bryce, did throw the ball at the kids face on purpose. Dick move to the highest degree. If it were my son and I found out, he'd be catching 7 shades of hell at home for that. But assault charges...cmon now. Also, the kid that was injured had a pre-existing condition, a chronic brain stem infliction...so why was he playing dodgeball? If you're going to ask me what I think if it were my child, um...first off, I'd let the school know that my kid had some wack ass shit going on with his brain and that he should definitely not be playing contact sports of any type. It sucks for the kid because they have a ton of energy, they don't want to be left out or castigated by their peers for being different. Kids can be cruel, as evidenced. HOWEVER...it beats being dead or having an even more severe brain injury the rest of your life. The mother of the afflicted child even said this was not the first time her son had been targeted. He'd been hit in the face twice before with a ball...um...so maybe...just maybe like someone with a preexisting condition, shouldn't be given the go-ahead. How many times do you allow your child to be put in a compromising situation before you remove him from it? Once, accidental, ok no biggie, twice...ok now this is not cool and maybe we stop playing Russian Roulette with your kid's brain via dodgeball.Honestly, there is enough blame to go around here for everyone to take a giant bite. Parents of both children, the school, both kids...everyone here just seems like a bunch of assholes. One parent won't be proactive in taking care of her kid's legitimate brain health. One parent won't teach her kid that bullying is not tolerated. The school who wasn't proactive on either end.Geezus fuck, gonna charge a kid with assault when none of the "responsible" adults even attempted to pump the brakes on this dumpster fire? No thanks. He's 10. If any charges are getting thrown, it should be at all of the adults involved.
