Cathay Williams, the first African American woman to serve in the United States Military. She posed as Private William Cathay due to the laws in place at the time but in order to serve her country. Discover how Cathay carved a symbolically important place in the history of the American Woman, the history of African Americans, and the history of the United States Army. We are honored to announce Cathay as a Community Hero!
